I am so excited to announce our 2022 Hear for the Holidays winners. To put this into perspective, choosing winners was no easy task.
We had over 40 nominations this year, far exceeding our previous years. Each person nominated was deserving, and it was hard to narrow them down.
But we’ve done a good job, and we wanted to put people up for nomination who had put others’ needs before their own and had always cared for friends, family, and their community.
We are really onto something with this program, as it’s only our second year and it has grown exponentially.
At its core, HFTH is about raising awareness and opening communication about hearing loss. Since starting this contest, we’ve received many questions about hearing loss from people, about themselves and their loved ones.
The more we talk and learn about hearing loss, the more we can prevent it. Let’s keep up the good work, everyone, so we can continue this program and our mission of healing everyone in Massachusetts.
Enough chitchat; let’s announce this year’s winners!
Meet Our Winners
We’ve selected a winner from each of our four locations so no one feels left out.
Our first winner, for our Dartmouth location, will be fit by Dr. Carrie Landis and her team. He was nominated by many people: friends, family members, and people from his Boy Scout troop years ago.
He has been described as a giver his entire life. We felt it was his time to shine and get the help that he truly needed.
His wife, who is his biggest supporter, had this to say about him in her nomination:
“He’s been deaf his whole life. He puts himself last always and will drop anything for family and friends, including lending money we don’t have. This would mean the world to him to lessen the financial burden and enjoy his family and friends’ company during this holiday season.”
Mary Vezina—Fall River
Mary, who was nominated by her daughter, has had hearing aids for a while that desperately needed replacing. She just couldn’t do that, though, because she had to put others’ needs before hers.
Her husband has had some health issues, so she’s become his primary caregiver. She’s had to go to many, many doctor’s visits struggling to hear what was being said.
We felt it was time for her to feel comfortable and confident in that position and to step into that role a little more efficiently.
Mary’s daughter provided a heartfelt nomination:
“My mom has struggled with hearing loss for almost her whole life. It started with Meniere’s disease early on and has not improved since becoming my father’s primary caregiver, who’s battled colon cancer and glioblastoma. Her role has shifted from passenger to Uber driver since my father can no longer drive due to seizures. Her outdated hearing aids aren’t cutting it. We see evidence of her hearing loss when we’re out and talking, and she can’t hear, which creates stress. She wants to be part of the conversations, but we see her retreat. Her ability to hear without stress would be a wonderful gift.”
We were introduced to Jonathan when he came out to fix some plumbing issues here in the office.
We found out that he has had hearing loss since childhood. He wore hearing aids then, but was unable to get new ones because his insurance no longer covered them.
He’s a father of three and a hardworking man. So hardworking, in fact, that we couldn’t surprise him with an office visit. We had to get his work involved to help us. We developed a plan to have him come to our office, thinking that we needed our toilet fixed.
Meanwhile, we had his family waiting here to give him the good news with some kind words.
“He works extremely hard for his family and never takes a moment for himself; he makes sure his family has everything they need and want. He needs a new pair of hearing aids because his hearing has gotten worse, and they will make his job easier.”
What Each Winner Receives
We want to introduce you to everything these fantastic winners will get.
- The star of the show and the first thing they will be gifted is a pair of premium-level hearing devices from GN ReSound. These devices are top quality, giving our winners the gift of hearing for days, months, and years to come.
- They’ll also be given a year’s worth of service by us here at Duncan Hearing Healthcare, so they’ll have no out-of-pocket hearing expenses for the next year.
- And lastly, included will be a box of gourmet cookies delivered to us by Black Tie Cookies in Dartmouth. They’re delicious, and we hope this is a little sweet treat to get them through the holidays.
