Tinnitus Triage Guidelines

Refer to Audiologist

(Non-Urgent Referral)

Tinnitus & ALL of the following:

Symptoms suggest neural origin of Tinnitus (i.e. does not pulse with heartbeat)

No ear pain, drainage, or malodor

No vestibular symptoms (i.e. no dizziness/vertigo)

No unexplained sudden hearing loss or facial palsy

Refer to Audiologist

(Urgency Can Vary)

Tinnitus & ANY of the following:

Symptoms suggest somatic origin of tinnitus (i.e. tinnitus that pulses with heartbeat)

Ear pain, drainage, or malodor

Vestibular symptoms (i.e. dizziness/vertigo)

Refer to Audiologist

(Urgent Referral)

Tinnitus & ANY of the following:

Physical Trauma

Facial palsy

Sudden unexplained hearing loss (needs to be seen ASAP for consideration of steroid treatment)

Refer to Audiologist

(Urgent Referral)

Tinnitus & ANY of the following:

Suicidal ideation

Obvious mental health problems
