What Is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of a sound with no external sound source. Although bothersome, tinnitus usually isn’t a sign of something serious. It can affect people very differently.

Some people live with it for many years and are unbothered by it. Some people find after many years of living with their tinnitus unbothered, one day it intensifies and they need help in managing it. Others immediately need help.

If you find that you’re struggling with tinnitus symptoms, our team is happy to help you with our varied treatment plans that can help you move past that phantom noise and hear the world around you with no distractions.

Personalized Tinnitus Care with Solutions for Every Individual

There are also many different types of sounds heard, people report hearing high pitched tones, hissing, whooshing, crickets, music, and many other sounds.

Also, some people report no difficulty sleeping while others can’t possibly get to sleep because of their tinnitus perception. Because there is no one type, at Duncan Hearing Healthcare, we find there is no single approach to tinnitus management that works exclusively for every patient. Therefore our practitioners are trained in several different modalities and draw from any/all of them depending on the individual’s needs.

Tinnitus Management Strategies Our Practitioners Use

Nutrition

A balanced diet supports overall health, and certain nutrients may improve ear function, potentially reducing tinnitus severity.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness practices can help individuals focus away from the ringing in their ears, promoting relaxation and reducing the emotional impact of tinnitus.

Stress Management

Managing stress is crucial for tinnitus sufferers, as stress can exacerbate the condition. Techniques like meditation and relaxation exercises help control this trigger.

TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy)

TRT combines sound therapy with counseling to retrain the brain’s response to tinnitus, helping patients gradually ignore the sound.

PTM (Progressive Tinnitus Management)

PTM uses a step-by-step approach to help patients manage tinnitus through sound therapy, coping strategies, and education tailored to individual needs.

Sound Enrichment

Sound enrichment introduces pleasant background noises to mask tinnitus, making the ringing less noticeable and providing relief.

Tinnitus Sound Management with Amplification

Combining tinnitus sound therapy with amplification devices, such as hearing aids, helps reduce the perception of tinnitus by enhancing external sounds.

Hearing Aid Fittings

Properly fitted hearing aids improve overall hearing, reducing the brain’s focus on tinnitus and providing relief for many sufferers.

Potential Causes of Tinnitus

  • Hearing Loss
  • Frequent exposure to loud sounds
  • Medications
  • Stress/anxiety
  • Head/Neck Injuries
  • Disease
  • Vascular Issues
  • Earwax
  • TMJ

Underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure, ear injuries, or issues within the auditory nerve can also trigger tinnitus. Understanding the root cause is essential for managing symptoms and finding appropriate treatment options.

How Is Tinnitus Treated?

Hearing Aids

For individuals with hearing loss, hearing aids can be an effective treatment for tinnitus. By amplifying external sounds, they help mask the internal ringing or buzzing associated with tinnitus, making it less noticeable.

Hearing aids can also improve overall hearing, reducing the strain on the auditory system and potentially alleviating tinnitus symptoms.

Sound Enrichment

Sound enrichment involves using external sounds, such as white noise, nature sounds, or gentle music, to mask the tinnitus.

These sounds can help distract from the internal ringing and provide a soothing environment, especially in quiet settings where tinnitus is often more pronounced. Devices like sound machines, fans, or apps can be used to create a calming auditory background.

Relaxation Techniques

Stress is known to exacerbate tinnitus, so relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can be beneficial. These methods help lower stress levels, which in turn can reduce the intensity of tinnitus symptoms.

Regular relaxation practices can create a calmer mental state, making it easier to cope with the condition.

Managing Emotions

Tinnitus can often cause frustration, anxiety, and even depression.

Learning to manage these emotional responses is crucial for coping with the condition. Support groups, therapy, and mindfulness techniques can help individuals process their feelings about tinnitus, improving their overall well-being and reducing the emotional toll the condition can take.

Sleep Management

Tinnitus can interfere with sleep, but developing healthy sleep habits can help. Establishing a regular bedtime routine, using sound enrichment during the night, and practicing relaxation techniques before bed can make falling asleep easier.

Proper sleep is essential for reducing stress and improving overall quality of life, which can also positively impact tinnitus symptoms.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a structured therapeutic approach that helps individuals change negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with tinnitus. It teaches coping strategies to manage the emotional impact of the condition, helping people reduce the distress caused by tinnitus and develop healthier responses to its presence.

CBT has been shown to be highly effective in improving quality of life for those with chronic tinnitus.
