Why Are My Hearing Aids Whistling? Top 3 Tips to Fix Your Devices at Home

03/10/2025 | Hearing Aids, Patient Resources

When you notice your hearing aids whistling or buzzing, it can be frustrating—you’ve invested in your hearing health, and it’s crucial that your devices function correctly.

Just as you would take your car to a mechanic for unexpected noises, your hearing devices deserve the same attention. If your hearing aids have started buzzing or if you have noticed feedback when trying to listen to your loved ones, there are several potential causes.

Before you toss your hearing aids in the junk drawer, there are some quick fixes you can try at home before bringing them to our team for a professional tune-up.

1. Adjust the Fit

As your body changes, so too can the fit of your hearing aids. If they no longer fit snugly, the lack of an acoustic seal allows sound to escape, which is often the culprit behind unwanted whistling.

To remedy this, consider adjusting the fit by changing the ear molds. A well-fitting device can significantly enhance sound quality and reduce issues with feedback from sound echoing through the microphone from loose earpieces.

2. Clean Your Hearing Aids

Your hearing aids might be amplifying sound in ways you didn't expect, especially if earwax is blocking the sound delivery to your ear canal. This accumulation can lead to a nasty whistling noise or, worse, affect your hearing ability.

If earwax is clogging the wax guards on your hearing aids, you can quickly address the problem by swapping the wax guards out for fresh ones. Once that's addressed, it's essential to check your hearing aids for any wax that may have made its way into vents and receivers.

Keeping your hearing aids clean is crucial for optimal performance.

3. Turn Down the Volume!

If your hearing aid sounds quieter than usual, it might be tempting to increase the volume. However, raising the volume too high can cause feedback, resulting in that annoying whistling noise.

Instead, try lowering the volume and see if that alleviates the issue. Sometimes, issues in programming could lead to elevated sound levels, so discussing this with your audiologist could also help pinpoint the problem.

Give Your Hearing Aids Some TLC!

Taking the initiative to troubleshoot your hearing aids is commendable and can often lead to quick solutions. However, it’s also important to remember that while some issues can be resolved at home, others require professional attention.
