Why Should You See an Audiologist?

10/19/2020 | Hearing Aids, Hearing Loss, Hearing Tests, Industry News, Patient Resources

Believe it or not, hearing loss is the third most common health problem that the country faces. Luckily, the whole month is dedicated to shedding light on audiology.

Each October, the audiology community participates in National Audiology Awareness Month.

“Ask Me About Audiology” is one of the well-known campaigns that the American Academy of Audiology hosts to highlight audiology and continue to normalize everything that comes with the territory.

The fact of the matter is, more people should be going to see an audiologist. Take a look at why.

What Is an Audiologist?

Johns Hopkins Medicine defines audiologists as “health care professionals who identify, assess, and manage disorders of hearing, balance, and other neural systems.”

As helpful as that may sound, some people may still be wondering what that actually looks like.

Many people assume audiologists work primarily with the elderly community, but that is not the case at all.

Their patients range in age and situation. In this field, hearing aids are a common solution to hearing loss, and audiologists are professionals at the selection and fitting process.

Not to mention, many audiologists are passionate about research and data and are actively contributing their efforts to these causes.

At the end of the day, audiologists are experienced professionals who are here to help.

What Are the Benefits of Seeing an Audiologist?

Seeing an audiologist is an excellent decision. The health and well-being of the ears are connected to the whole body. For this reason alone, it is beneficial to consider scheduling an appointment with an audiologist.

There are many hearing conditions like tinnitus that typically indicate a larger problem is at hand.

Most importantly, undiagnosed and untreated hearing problems can ultimately lead to hearing loss.

Going to see an audiologist could prevent people from falling victim to depression or mental distress due to hearing issues.

Taking action now could greatly pay off down the line.

What Should You Do if You or a Loved One Are Interested in Seeing an Audiologist?

It is clear that there are a lot of benefits and advantages to seeing an audiologist. However, given the ongoing state of the world, some people might be hesitant and reluctant to schedule an appointment.

Taking an online hearing test may sound convenient, but it comes at a high risk; parties who have completed online hearing screenings have been misdiagnosed.

In some cases, a misdiagnosis can mask a much more serious health issue, such as a tumor.

By going in to see an audiologist, patients guarantee that they will receive complete advanced audiological hearing assessments.

Audiologists follow the best practices to receive the best possible results.
